‘You can just snap out of depression’ – Telling someone with depression to “snap out of it” is like telling someone with diabetes to do the same thing.

Everyone gets depressed’ – although depression is common, not everyone experiences, and everyone’s experiences are very different. 

Depression only affects women’ – due to social pressures, men do not tend to share their emotions or ask for help unlike women which leads to men being more likely to commit suicide then women are.

SIGNS of Depression

  • Loss of interest in activities and or interests.
  • Overeating or not wanting to eat at all.
  • Being tired a lot of the time
  • Aches, pains, headaches and cramps
  • Not able to meet daily responsibilities
  • Forgetful or not remembering details
  • Cancelled plans
  • Pushing those close to them away.

How to COPE with Depression

Unfortunately, it is not something that can ease up overnight. Try the following steps to help coping, remember everyone is different and everyone has their own coping methods.

Do things that make you feel good, if that’s exercise, drawing, any activity that you have an interest in will help.

Try and get enough sleep and use relaxation techniques to calm a busy mind.

Get a daily dose of sunlight, natural light has serotonin in so can lighten moods.

Talk to friends/family. Don’t hold all your thoughts in, being in your own head is sometimes the worst place to be. Your loved ones will be there for you.

Seek professional help, there are many different things professionals can offer to help you. Therapies, medication and sometimes knowledge.

Know that as each day passes, you are still living. The sun will always rise in the sky even if we can not see it, it is there.

How to HELP someone with Depression

Research depression and what it entails so you can get an insight into their lives.

Support them in getting their recovery. Be there for them during the process, if you can, so they do not feel alone.

Accept them as they are, avoid judging them and what they may tell you.

Gently encourage them to seek help if they are not accessing any actively. You can not make someone get help if they do not want to, but gentle encouragement and involvement may help.
